Fall 2021 Commencement Information

Jackson State alumna and expert economist will keynote the fall 2021 commencement

Jackson State University will host its fall 2021 commencement ceremony on Friday, December 10, at 10 a.m. in the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.

The keynote for the occasion is Kristen Broady, Ph.D., a JSU alumna and Fellow in the Metropolitan Policy Program at The Brookings Institution.

An expert on economic disparities, labor and automation, Broady has conducted extensive research and policy analysis on the impact of automation on the future of work, the racial wealth gap and fintech innovations. She has testified before the U.S. House of Representatives, and her quotes have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Politico and USA Today, among many other noted news outlets. She was also featured in the American international business magazine Fortune as one of 19 Black economists to celebrate and know.

Broady previously served as a faculty member at Alabama A&M University, Dominican University, Kentucky State University and Fort Valley State University, where she also doubled as the department chair of Business and Economics. The economist was the dean of the College of Business at Dillard University and a visiting faculty member at Jiangsu Normal University in Xuzhou, China.

Broady served as a consultant for the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies in Washington, D.C.; a senior research fellow for the Center for Global Policy Solutions in Washington, D.C.; a consultant for the City of East Point, Georgia; and as an HBCU consultant for season two of The Quad on Black Entertainment Television (BET) in Atlanta.

Broady earned a B.A. in criminal justice at Alcorn State University and an M.B.A. and Ph.D. in business administration with a major in economics at Jackson State University. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and The Baltimore (MD) Chapter of The Links, Inc.

Rehearsal

  • Thursday, December 9, 2021, at 10 a.m. in the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center.

Graduate Hooding Ceremony

  • Thursday, December 9, 2021, at 4 p.m. at the F. D. Hall Music Building Auditorium.

Regalia Distribution

  • Begins Monday, December 6 – Thursday, December 9 from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. and Friday, December 10 at 7:30 a.m. in Tiger Mart located across from the JSU Campus Bookstore.

 

Livestream

  • All commencement programs will Livestream on JSU Facebook at JacksonStateU.

 

Social Distancing/Minimizing Contact

  • Graduates will be seated in physically distanced seats and invited to walk across the stage while their names are called.
  • Graduates will not shake hands. Photos will be taken, but social distancing will be maintained.
  • Graduates will not be hooded as part of the ceremonies. Instead, graduate hoods/stoles, honor cords, etc., will be distributed in advance so graduates can wear them during the ceremonies.
  • The commencement program will be available online no later than Thursday, December 9, 2021, at jsums.net/jsucommencement.
  • There will be a minimal platform party to reduce the density of people on the commencement stage.
  • Upon arrival to the venue, graduates and faculty will be directed to their designated seats. There will be no graduate or faculty processional.
  • The commencement ceremony will be supported by professional event staff who will direct participants to appropriate seating, facilitate physical distancing and ensure the appropriate use of masks.
