ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION
Jackson State University selects students for admission on the basis
of academic qualifications as indicated by prior academic performance,
test scores, and the recommendations of teachers and guidance personnel.
In evaluating applicants, the University also values evidence of
good character, citizenship, commitment to education, and personal
attributes. Jackson State University is committed to assuring equal
opportunity to all persons, and does not discriminate on the basis
or race, creed, color, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion,
national or ethnic origin, disability, or veteran status in its educational
programs, activities, admissions or employment practices. As a publicly-assisted
institution, the University gives first preference of admission to
students who are residents of Mississippi.
GENERAL ADMISSIONS
While Jackson State University has basic admissions requirements,
each applicant is considered individually. The total high
school experience, other special circumstances, and socioeconomic
background are also considered. Students, therefore, who
meet the spirit of this admission philosophy are encouraged
to apply.
Specific information on admission policies and requirements
may be obtained from the Office of Admissions or the Office of Undergraduate Recruitment.
RESIDENCY STATUS
Jackson State University observes the following definitions
and interpretations as defined by Mississippi State Law,
in the classification of students as residents or non-residents.
The University holds the student responsible for knowing
and registering under the correct status. Students who willfully
register their status incorrectly are subject to disciplinary
action or dismissal and will be required to pay applicable
fees. Details are available in the Office of Admissions.
EXPENSES
The matter of expenses while attending Jackson State University
is of importance to every student. The cost of attending
the university varies for each student, based upon the curriculum,
their residency status (whether within Mississippi or outside),
and the student’s own habits and needs. It is expected,
however, that all students will have sufficient funds upon
entering the University to pay their educational and personal
expenses. All expenses must be paid in cash, by money order,
personal check or certified check, using personal funds,
financial aid, scholarships or other financial resources.
It is expected that each student will review his/her financial
statement of account to assure that charges have been assessed
for each service (e.g. tuition, fees, housing, board) received
from the university. Discrepancies in accounts should be addressed
to the department offering the service or to the Office of
Financial Services. If the service has been (or is being) received
from the university, the student is responsible for payment
for services received.
