FOOD SERVICES
The Department of Food Services provides meal service for students
that have contracted to live in on-campus housing. Meal plans may
also be purchased by students who live off-campus. Meals are consistent
with the basic necessities of good health and proper diet.
A schedule of meal hours is posted in the foyer of the dining
hall, on residence hall bulletin boards, and at other campus
locations.
Food Services are provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
Meal plans are non-transferable. The unauthorized use of meal
cards is prohibited.
Except on occasions when bag or box lunches are prepared,
food is not to be taken from the dining area. A signed request
by the residence hall director is required for permission to
take food to a student who is confined to the residence hall
for a valid reason.
All boarding students are required to purchase a meal plan.
Freshmen students may choose either a 15 or 20 meal plan. The
10 meal plan is limited to upperclass students, and the five
meal plan is limited to seniors, commuting and graduate students.
Students are expected to observe standards of good conduct
and good citizenship while in the dining area. Violation of
the Code of Conduct may result in one of the following penalties:
fine, disciplinary warning, probation, suspension, exclusion,
or dismissal.
The Convenience Store and Legacy Sports Grill are also operated
by the Food Service Department. Both are located on the second
floor of the Campus Union.
STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES
The Student Health Center serves all students at Jackson State
University. Full-time students are assessed a fee in conjunction
with tuition to cover the cost of using the Health Center.
All patients are responsible for the cost of medicine, lab
work and other diagnostic tests. The cost of these services
are not covered by the student insurance.
A Nurse Practitioner serves as Director and Head Nurse, and
is assisted by a staff of full- and part-time health professionals.
Center hours are weekdays, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Two part-time
physicians are employed by the Center to serve students during
designated hours. The Health Center provides an array of medical
services and medical-related referral services for full-time
students.
Emergencies, After Hours and Weekends
On-campus students who become ill after regular clinic hours
should inform the residence hall coordinator or staff person
on duty, or they may call the Department of Public Safety
(979-2580) for assistance. A night and weekend “on-call
service” is designed to respond to such cases.
Student Insurance
Full-time undergraduate and graduate students are offered limited
coverage by the student insurance program; however, all students
are urged to have their own health insurance policy or be
covered by a parent’s policy. Students are required
to pay medical deductibles. Students are also required to
report to the Student Health Center before going to any hospital
and /or private physician for any illness or injury to be
covered by the JSU Student Health Insurance Program. Failure
to do so will result in the student being responsible for
his/her own bill(s). Emergencies are to be reported as stated
in the Emergencies, After Hours and Weekends section of this
handbook.
Ambulance Service
Students must notify the JSU Department of Public Safety or
the residence hall staff person on duty for ambulance service.
Paying the cost of ambulance service is the student’s
responsibility. Calls for ambulance service emanating from
the campus are first verified by officials of the JSU Public
Safety Department (Campus Police).
Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act
Federal legislation requires the University to maintain data
on the types and number of crimes on university/college property,
as well as policies dealing with campus security. To obtain
additional information, contact the University’s Department
of Public Safety.
