About JSU
Jackson State University is a historically black, co-educational,
research intensive, public institution of higher learning that
has been designated by the Board of Trustees of State Institutions
of Higher Learning as the “urban university” of Mississippi.
The University is proud of its heritage, is committed to its
future as a diversified, urban institution, and is dedicated
to developing individual students and solving urban problems.
JSU
is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools to award the bachelor’s,
master’s education specialist, Doctor of Education, and Doctor
of Philosophy degrees. Jackson State University has seven undergraduate
academic schools: Allied Health Sciences, Business, Education,
Engineering, Liberal Arts, Science and Technology, and Social Work.
The Division of Undergraduate Studies provides a comprehensive
academic support program for
all incoming freshmen and transfer students. The W. E. B. DuBois
Honors College offers excellent academic training and stimulating
challenges to academically outstanding students and offers its
members an enriched curriculum, smaller classes, and prestige.
Location
Jackson State University is located in Jackson, Mississippi,
the capital and largest city of the state. Jackson is the geographic,
political, industrial, and cultural center of the state. The
metropolitan area consists of a growing population presently
estimated at 425,000.
Campus
The campus is a scenic, 172-acre tract situated one mile west
of the main business district of the city of Jackson and
easily accessible from U. S. Highways 80, 49, and 51, and Interstates
20 and 55. A modern, international airport with direct connections
to major cities is about fifteen minutes away.
